Dateline: 27th January 2009. Location: Mill Field, Aveley, Essex. Assignment: Aveley vs Dover Athletic in the Ryman League Cup 3rd Round for the Thurrock Recorder newspaper. Image (above): Neil Richmond celebrates scoring a goal for Aveley. Weather: Cool but dry.
For those technically minded (and vaguely interested), the match was photographed using the (infamous) Canon EOS 1D MkIII camera cranked up to ISO 6400 (to achieve a lower-than-I’d-have-liked shutter speed of 1/500s at f/2.8). Yep, noise-tastic… but needs must and the pix seem to have held up rather well… all things considered.
The reputation of the MkIII version of Canon’s flagship SLR body was blighted by early production models that exhibited significant focusing issues. I was fortunate to have a pair that worked OK. Others did not have the same luck and, at the time, I recall many Canon users selling their kit and transitioning across to great rivals Nikon!
Neil Richmond’s lone goal was not enough for Aveley to progress and it was Dover who eased into Round Four courtesy of a comfortable 4-1 victory.
